Have you ever noticed those wire junctions connected everywhere inside your CPU? have you ever wondered what those are used for? What is the science behind them and their other counterparts? Well, if yes, you are at the right place. We at Toolspond are always at your service.
Eight pin EPS connectors are widely used today in Power Supply Unit ( PSU). The 8 pin EPS connector is what connects the end of your 8-pin EPS cable to your power supply and motherboard.
They are manufactured to very high standards and work with all compatible terminals. There are male and female types of 8 EPS connectors available.
The science behind eight-pin EPS connectors
Because there are specific connectors manufactured for high-end motherboards and CPUs that require additional power for backward compatibility, the eight-pin EPS 12V includes an 8-pin connector. It’s a second connector to the motherboard (in addition to the 24-pin ATX motherboard connector) that provides dedicated CPU power.
The technology behind EPS connectors
EPS stands for the Entry-Level Power Supply Specification. It is a power supply unit designed for computers with high power consumption and entry-level servers. The EPS form factor is derived from the ATX form factor itself; in fact, it could be termed as the variant of the ATX form factor. Developed by the Server System Infrastructure (SSI) forum, EPS soon rose to power with a collection of firms that research and develop server standards, including Intel, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and others. The most recent server standard is V2.93.
Theoretically speaking, EPS-type PSUs are compatible with standard ATX or ATX12V motherboards typically used in homes and offices. However, complications may arise if the connector or the 12 V ports overhangs the circuit in the case of newer boards. Several manufacturers provide unflappable accessories to save you from this worst-case scenario.
Eight pin EPS connector and its counterpart PCI-E connector
The EPS connector is used to power a motherboard’s CPU socket, whereas the PCI express connector is used to power a graphics card.
The square and rounded-off connections are organized so that you shouldn’t be able to swap between them. The top left relationship on the EPS 12V is squared off, but the top left connector on the PCI – E is rounded off in the previous image. Differences like this prevent a PCI -E connection from being plugged into an eight-pin EPS1 2V.
Is the eight-pin EPS connector interchangeable with PCI -E?
Attempting to swap between them will cause physical damage from trying to fit physically different connections and electrical harm from reversing the device’s power supplies. To figure out what a cable is, I’d recommend looking at the connectors (which are usually labeled), as well as the order/color of the power cables connecting to the connection. On the other hand, connectors are not typically color-labeled.
Applications of 8 Pin EPS connector
There are varied applications of EPS connectors, and over time, it has become quite a thing to include these in complex CPU wirings.
Basic Z590 motherboards, like the more minor mATX variants, now include at least one four-pin and eight-pin EPS connector socket, and many (including my ASRock Z590 Steel Legend) feature two 8pin EPS connectors.
Going up to the most power-hungry LGA 1200 CPU, the i9 10900K/F, there are two total 8-pin EPS sockets; the use is justified as they are targeted for higher-end machines with extremely powerful overclockers.
To make your pc more eye-catching
8-Pin EPS extension cables are an excellent method to improve the overall appearance of your computer without the effort or price of a wholly sleeved and single braided power supply cable set. Once you’ve connected the 8-Pin EPS Extension to your current cable set, you’re good to go.
Eight pin EPS Vs. 4 pin connector – which one to use?
Various connection standards exist. These ports provide power to the CPU.
Initially reserved for professional servers, the 8 Pin EPS connector is now used on various consumer boards. It has a higher power output than the 4-pin.
With only a 4-pin attached, most motherboards with an eight-pin EPS receptacle will work (filling half of the receptacle).
For most CPUs, a 4-pin connection is sufficient, and no CPU on an H110 board would “bottleneck” due to a 4-pin connector. A Core i7-7700K will only demand additional power if it is overclocked, and hence the use of 8 pin EPS would become inevitable.
4+4 Pin EPS vs. 8 pin EPS
|8 pin EPS
|4+4 Pin EPS
|8 Pin EPS are the CPU connector cables that have 8 pins in the connectors
|4+4 pin Connecters are essentially 8 pin connectors only, just split into two.
|These work as a single connecter unit.
|These are split into two 4-pin connectors.
|They work in the newer CPUs.
|They only work in the older CPUs, which only have 4-pin ports on the motherboards.
|They cannot be used interchangeably in the older motherboards.
|These also cannot be used interchangeably.
Can an 8-pin EPS connector be maxed out?
If you’re not using a bad cable or some unknown type of motherboard, you’ll never max out a current 8-pin EPS. I’m not sure what the precise figure is, but they’re all capable of drawing at least 300W per 8-pin (maybe even 400W?), cannot be indeed said. For one thing, Buildzoid mentions it often every time he examines a board with two or more 8pin EPS connectors.
All were owing to the widespread adoption of broad, solid power pins on recent motherboards. When you compare the size of the EPS pins on your board to something from 12 years ago, you’ll notice a significant difference.

FAQs on 8 Pin EPS
How to buy 8 Pin EPS connectors?
They are readily available online from any e-commerce site, depending upon the requirement. Alternatively, you can find them in any electronic accessory shop specializing in computer accessories.
Alternatives of 8-pin EPS connectors?
There are many alternatives found in the market, and each of them can be used with almost identical efficiency, provided the system is not hardcore overclocked. Some of the options are – 4 pin connectors, two 4pin connectors can be effectively used, but again ! everything depends upon the usage.
Can 8 pin EPS connecter cause heating problems?
Ideally, no, there is not a chance to max out an eight-pin EPS connector. The whole logic behind using multiple wires instead of one is to connect them in parallel to minimize energy dissipation.
